DESIGN STUDIO 1

This module is to generate design concept or idea through the process of sketching and model-making and translate it into simple (architectural) design. We have to apply the understanding of basic architectural design principles, and the notion of body and space interactions into our designs. At the same time, we can maximize the utilization of sketching, study modelling and other preliminary design tools going through the process-oriented approach in developing designs to produce a well-organized, systematic and creative graphical presentation through a well-drawn and executed two-dimensional form (plans, elevations and sections), three-dimensional form (sectional perspective, axonometric and perspective) and scale modelling. Moreover, this module is to prepare and enhance students verbal communication and presentation skills, all three projects are to be presented to tutors assigned, respective lecturers and external assessors.

PROJECT 1

The first assignment for this module was "Representing Me". This assignment was an ice-breaking design project to introduce the basic methods and approaches in generation of ideas and conceptual narratives. Students had to represent themselves in an abstract way through their designs.

rEPRESENTING ME

This was the very first assignment of my architecture student's life. We had to design something that can represent us in an abstract way. Through this assignmnet, I had learnt something that is really new and so different for me. We had to think critically throughout the design process so that the outcome will be more unique and different.

The introvert

In this assignment, i had designed something that looks like a "box" to represent myself. The word I used to describe myself was "Introvert", the ones that don't say or talk much, only hide themselves in their own worlds. I'd received some opinions and suggestions that i found they help a lot from my tutor and also my accessor on how to improve my work.

project 2

The second assignment of this module is to design a life capsule for a 24-hours use. We have to aware about the human body, consider about the anthropometry and ergonomics. Through this limited space, we can explore more about the scaled models because it is then blown up to a full scaled installation. First in this assignment, we have to form a group of 4-6, within this group, we have to decide who will be our client for this life capsule. For my group, my groupmates and I had decided to choose a yogist as our client. So we explored more from this client's needs, desires and her hobbies.

So we had related the fluidity of a yogist's body to something that is organic like water. Because of this, the shape and form of the life capsule was in a dome-shaped to represent the fluidity. For a yogist, all she needs is an empty and large space for her to do yoga. So we had decided to leave the space inside empty. At the same time, to maximize the usage of the space, we had designed tables that can be kept for her to carry out some other activities llike studying, resting and also eating.

Throughout this assignment, the first thing i'd learnt was the "Team Spirit", how can we discuss, come out with the ideas that everyone of us has to agree with this. How can we complete this project as a group and so on. During the model making, we had overcame with many problems and also mistakes, but at last we came out with something that was nicer and better. For example, my groupmates met the problem of how to make our model stand and stable enough. We also encountered with the problem on how to install our model at our site (waterfall). We solved this problem through some smart solutions after discussion. There are some other difficulties that we had faced throughout this project, but we've gone through it without giving up. I'd also learnt many things from this difficulties as well as from my lovely teammates.

In Project 3, we will incorporate with both the creativity and imagination that had we had learnt from Project 1 and Project 2. There are two parts in this Project 3, that is Project 3A and Project 3B as well. In this Project 3A, in a group of 4-6 as well, we had to choose and decide which mvie we will be taking for our site for our hide-out. We watched many movies like Fast and Furious. Inception, SkyFall and also Upside Down because there are some alleys appeared in these movies that are suitable for this site. So at last, my group members and i had decided to choose Upside Down as our movie and also the alleys inside to be our site for our hide-out.

In this project, we have to design a hide-out for our client (we had chosen from a list) that can be fitted into our site (in Project 3A). The client i had chosen is Albert Einstein, a great physicist and scientist. I have desinged a hide-out for him based on his hobbies like sailing, reading and playing violin/ guitar. I'd received some suggestions from the examiner regarding my design intentention. The suggestion was about how can i design a hide-out in a different way and the final product will come out with different feeligs as well as effects. I found these opinions were very helpful and constructive in helping me to improve my works in the future.

In this project, we had encountered many difficulties as well like how to make this upside down world? We had tried many ways to solve problen and we succeeded at last. There are some other problems in our model as well. So after our tutor had talked and discussed with us, we managed to fix and make our model become a better and nicer one. There so many things to learn and improve as well as technique no matter in model-making or in our techinical drawings. We had received some comments and suggestions from our tutors in Design Communication regarding our model and techinical drawings so that we can improve our works in the future.

This is the last project for Design Studio 1 in the Architecture Sem 1, i feel so grateful and thankful as well towards our tutors and also our accessor or examiners. We'd received many encouraging and constructive suggestions and comments from them regarding our design concept or intention, how we applied our concepts n our designs and how we utilised the limitted space within the alley. Lastly, I hope that my life in architecturewill be very interesting and enjoyable like how it is in this sem 1 !
