PROJECT 1 . FAMIOUS PEOPLE, FAMILIAR PLACES

This project requires us to ‘learn from precedents’ (which relates to the History of Modern Architecture lectures) by interpretation and exploration of solids, planes, lines and frames in architectural design. We were to select on master architect and one of his building from a list given by our lecturer and to come out with different abstract models representing different elements of that particular building. So we have 5 members per group, I was in the same group with Ming Hwee, Yuheng, Ling Rong and Alfred. We had chosen Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright as the building for our group. There were 10 principles that we had taken from the Robie house that were hierarchy, subtraction & addition, privacy, interlocking space, open, axis, repetition, linear organization, geometry and planar.

Water colour drawings by our group member Ming Hwee.

From this project, I have learnt many different principles of deisgn like axis, linear organization, hierarchy and the others. This is useful and helpful as well that I could apply these principles while I am doing designs in my whole archi life for a better undrstanding  about the methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking. Therefore, I could improve myself and also the standard of my designs to a higher level.

PROJECT 2a . PICNIC PAVILLION

In this project, in  group of 2, we were to design a Picnic Pavillion (with a maximum volumn of 30m3) for a client with the purpose of eating and also relaxing. It shall include other activities such as meditation, observation and the others. Besides, this pavillion should correspond to the site that we had chosen.

DESIGN STUDIO 2

This module is a continuation from Architecture Design Studio 1. We will undertake a series studio based exercises and assignments that introduce the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. The key emphasis of the studio is “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment.

From this project, we had to design one Picnic Pavillion for the client that we had chosen. Me and my groupmate, Ming Hwee had chosen Leonardo Dicaprio as our client because of his special characteristic as an actor and also an environmentalist at the same time. We had learnt and gained knowledge on how to design the pavillion not only depends on the client but also taking the site context into the consideration as well. We designed this pavilion depends on the importance of family bonding for him rather than the career needs for his career. But we also received comments and suggestions that we have to make this pavillion becomes more specific to our client instead of just designing a space for him with his family.

PROJECT 2b . RETREAT HOUSE

Project 2B was like a continuation of the Project 2A but it was an individual work to design a beach house for our client remained the same as the Project 1's. In this project, I had taken the comments and suggestions given by the lecturers on my previous Picnic Pavillion design and applied it on this beach house design. The spaces inside were more specifically related and useful for the client. Besides, the site context was also applied in the design as well.
