DESIGN STUDIO 3
This studio emphasizes on the poetics of place and the experiential qualities of space in architecture. In the subject, we, the stu were ro explore the spatial typologies, poetics in architecture and also the concept of neighborhood and community. In this design work, we engaged with the studies and design of different spatial (linear and concentric) for a simple memorial space which explores the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences. The second project involves the design of a small scale Visitor Interpretive Centre for Sungai Lembing in its open landscape/suburban condition. This VIC has to engage with the spirit of place inherent within the site (Genus Loci), the site topography, history and socio-cultural events. The design work explores the plan-section integration to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, functional and responsive to its site.
PROJECT 1 . memorials themed "journey of 5 senses
In this project, we required to explore issues of spatial typologies and poetics through simple design exercises. We were working in groups of 4-5 students, to design and propose 2 schemes for a Memorial themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’. We were required to design the Memorials in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types (linear and concentric). There is no specific site for this design work, but the story of the Memorial should translate the narrative of events (Sabah Earthquake and Rohingya) given by our tutor, and it should be informed by precedents studies.
Memorial for Rohingya (Concentric)
Memorial for Sabah Earthquake (Linear)
In this project, we had learnt to Identify and explain the different spatial types (Linear and concentric) in architecture, and also how these spatial types inform the atmosphere of the space. Besides, we also learnt to create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space. We also managed to generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
PROJECT 2 . genus loci: site analysis and concept development
Site Analysis of Sungai Lembing
Project 2A: Site conditions & analysis (5%)
In the same group from Project 1, we were to conduct a site analysis of the physical context within the identified MACRO site (Sungai Lembing) and to collect data and record on the following using maps/diagrams and/or models and produce a digital presentation of 5-10 minutes per group :
-
Orientation (sun path)
-
Climate (rainfall & temperature)
-
Site contours
-
Adjacent street and vehicular traffic patterns
-
Pedestrian circulation
-
Neighbouring contexts
-
Vegetation
-
Views from the site
-
Views to the site
-
Views through the site
-
Noise
-
Human-Cultural
Project 2B: Concept development
In this project, we were to produce our personal interpretation of the MACRO site in the form of sketches. These personal interpretations of the overall character of the site will inform subsequent design decisions and conclude by identifying the key character(s) of place that would form inspiration in the design, and then present a Design Concept for the Visitor’s Interpretive Centre derived from the issues discovered.
PROJECT 3 . sungai lembing visitor interpretive centre
In this Project 3, the design brief calls for an architectural response to design a visitor interpretive centre for Sungai Lembing emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences and programmatic requirements.
